Glendower

ANGUS

Glendower Angus Stud, was established in 1957, by the late Tom Gordon, at Vittoria, with cows from the Hawkesbury Agricultural College dispersal sale and subsequent additions of females from studs including Kahlua, Milong, Wambanumba, Malleedale, Barwidgee, Kilmorey, Carramar, Strathdown, and Noranda.

Sires from studs such as Kahlua, Glengowan, Mt.William, Ben Nevis, Sparta, Ballanee, Cappawidgee, Folly Lodge, Waiteranui and Waimata have all been influential in the development of the herd.

Successes have been achieved in many fields, both market and exhibition, with stock sold in all mainland states of Australia, as well as to China (the first Angus female exported to China, came from Glendower) and to Chile. Show successes in earlier days at Sydney Royal, Canberra Royal, Dubbo National steer show, Blayney Steer Show, Sydney Royal Steer Show, have all featured prominently.

Currently we are breeding using proven sires, the progeny of New Zealand Sires, Monty of Waiteranui and Waimata Zulu, the purchased sire Bronmar Vern, Elswick Woody Z17,Glendower Zodiac B30, Koomooroo Tulagi B250. AI sires are selectively used to broaden our bloodlines. Popular sires are only used if they can offer the traits, which we require. Unfortunately, many do not.

Our aim is to breed sound functional and highly profitable Australian Angus Cattle, reared under entirely natural conditions. All cows must wean a calf, unassisted, every year from two years of age, and all bulls are sold with guarantees that they are sound for natural service. We constantly strive to improve growth rate and performance of our cattle, but we demand that our cattle maintain the breed famous traits of low birthweight and feed efficiency and the ability to thrive on variable pasture conditions.

Visual muscle scoring is very important to our selection process, along with strict structural-soundness, with our key mission to produce high quality red meat from grass.

The past few seasons are easily the worst that we have ever endured. The cattle have suffered greatly, and many have fallen by the way. What we have experienced is a unique selection opportunity, and those animals, which didn’t measure up were promptly culled. Some of those cows and bulls had “great figures”, unfortunately the “figures” just don’t provide the selection information we require.

As we enter 2011, we do so with the certainty of more feed on the ground than many of us have ever seen, and the promise of some considerable increase in prices for most types of cattle. We can only hope this trend continues for some time to come.

Our Beef Week display will showcase a cross section of our breeding herd; our current sires will be displayed along with our latest selection of yearling bulls.

We also hope to have some females available for sale on the day.

We look forward to welcoming you to our display.
