WANERA

POLL HEREFORDS

Wanera Poll Hereford Stud started in 1995, when Tony and Joan Keech sourced a handful of cows from various studs. Using A.I. and bulls from several studs to achieve a registered self replacing herd of 40 cows. The herd is based mainly on Elite, Wirruna, Mt Difficult and Beau River bulls.

Previously a commercial herd was run, having success in carcass competitions in Sydney and Dubbo against all breeds, including Grand Champion at Dubbo.

The Stud is based on the same lines as the commercial herd. We have a six week joining and all heifers are joined around 14 months to stay in line with the cow herd. No stud females or sires have yet been sold as they are still being improved to reach our personal targets.

The traits we concentrate on are ease of calving, daughter’s ease of calving and milk. Carcass traits important are eye muscle, fats and intramuscular fats. We are almost double breed average for eye muscle and in the top 10% for intramuscular fat. These traits are important to be graded MSA or Hereford Prime. We concentrate on feet and udders, as well as temperament- important for meat tenderness and working with the animals.
